Living a rural life in the Highlands of Scotland, Al is surrounded by subject matter for his paintings - farm and domestic animals. Many years of keen observation has taught him that each animal has its own character, and this is what he aims to portray in his highly textured and painterly work. It is this individuality and the personality of his cows and chickens that make his images so irresistible to both art lovers and animal lovers.

After graduating in illustration and design from Glasgow, Al pursued a successful career as a designer and illustrator for a range of clients from Inverness Caledonian Thistle Football Club to the Highland Council. He also painted wildlife and farm animals for sale in local galleries.

Having studied illustration, he was trained to paint and draw in a disciplined, precise manner, but when Al discovered oils he decided to explore a more loose and free style, which is when his painting began to develop into the style which is now reflected in his finished pieces. His work began to sell further afield and is now making an impact in galleries across the UK.

"Having been brought up in city surroundings in Glasgow makes me appreciate what I have around me now that I live in the Highlands of Scotland. I have formed a love for the countryside and the creatures round about me, which provide an endless source of inspiration for my paintings."
